Mad Cow Disease - It's about
cheap feed and cattle cannibalism
"I'm the guy that killed
that mad cow. I killed that cow Dec.9. It was processed into hamburger
along with 50 other cows and shipped to 8 states and was eaten by 1000's
of people. Some of those people will contract BSE and die." -Dave
Louthan
Dave Louthan is
the guy who killed the first cow in the U.S. (Dec. 2003) that tested
positive for BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy). BSE is linked to
a similar form of the incurable and fatal brain-wasting disease in humans,
called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, or vCJD
BSE is a result of
"cattle cannibalism"; simply put: cows eating cows. Or worse,
cows eating chicken manure !!! See

article
The U.S. government
has put enforcement actions banning this type of feed. See
FDA update
So, is this ban working? Well, the
FDA update
was posted on Sep. 30, 2003. Two months later,
Dave Louthan
kills the first mad cow in the U.S. on Dec. 9, 2003. Back to the
question: is this ban working? You be the judge.
Now for the
really-really scary part... prions are implicated in BSE
"Prion" stands for "proteinaceous
infectious particle". A prion is a protein naturally produced in
nerve cells and other cells... these are healthy prions. The rogue
prions from BSE forces the healthy prions to change shape.
Neurological damage results.
Humans might be
infected by prions in 2 ways:
-
Infection by means of diet or medical procedures.
-
Hereditary transmission.
The scary part is that
prions cannot be destroyed by cooking or burning. Remember, prions
are a protein, not a virus. When a cow infected by BSE is butchered,
the prions remain. The prions remain on the butcher's saws and
tables, even after washing, and will taint other meats passing thru that
shop, including organically raised beef !!!

Antioxidant is a
"substance that inhibits oxidation or inhibits reactions promoted by
oxygen or peroxides."
Free radicals are a
"Short-lived, highly reactive chemicals often derived from
oxygen-containing compounds, which can have detrimental effects
on cells, especially DNA and cell membranes." |
Studies at
Agriculture and Agri-Food
Canada have shown that out of 8 apples*, the
Red Delicious is the most nutritious. All apples are loaded with
vitamin C, but researchers have found that the skin of the Red
Delicious contains 5 times more antioxidants than the Empire, the last on the list. Antioxidants help fight cellular damage
caused by free radicals.
